Oregon Medical Qigong

At Oregon Medical Qigong (OMQ) in Eugene, we offer client care and medical qigong instruction. IIMQ curriculum courses, medical qigong workshops, and private instruction offer a wide range of opportunities for healing.

Anyone can jump start a new health perspective with a series of three medical qigong healing sessions. An individual session can also serve as an introduction to holistic medicine that has traditionally offered symptomatic care, vibrant health, mental clarity, and longevity training for

over a thousand years.

Our Mission

Our mission is to utilize our skills and experience to:

  • Provide the highest quality Medical Qigong instruction and client care.
  • Provide a compassionate, nurturing environment that listens deeply to the client, and offers a wide range of tools to engage the process of healing, prevention, and living closer to one's own life meaning and mission.
  • Inspire clients and students toward self-healing of mind, body, emotions, and spirit.

In ancient times, genuine societies and their heros possessed tools like medical qigong and sitting meditation to heal, clarify, and strengthen themselves in order to offer service. Given the current condition of confusion and suffering in the world, we would like to participate in a broad re-infusion of these healing and strengthening skills into the virtuous people and cultures of today.

The Director of Oregon Medical Qigong

Dr. Eric Shaffer , DMQ (China) offers client care and instruction in medical qigong. His vision as a practitioner and faculty member is to maintain the high standards of the IIMQ while spreading its knowledge. “Our energetic medicine is compassionate, effective, affordable, and ‘green’ (virtually free of side effects, technology and infrastructure)”.

His license to practice medical qigong is from the Western District Medical Qigong Science and Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute (Beijing, China), License # 98026.09. His specializations are oncology, gerontology, and integrating sitting meditation in healing.

At Oregon Medical Qigong we feel that training in quiescent meditation with an authorized instructor is essential to balance the dynamic aspects of medical qigong healing or student training. In the face of the depth and power of internal energy training, relaxing and releasing addicition to "me" through meditation training is necessary. Meditation yields mental clarity and warmth, ingredients that we need in the care of ourselves and others.

Secular sitting meditation for health is offered privately or in a group setting at OMQ as an adjunct healing method for those who are interested. (The same method taught at OMQ may be learned from any authorized Shambhala Buddhist meditation instructor at over 160 centers in the world, although the presentation at OMQ is secular and nearly always combined with qigong).

Medical Qigong Training

  • Doctoral specialization: 1) Medical Qigong Oncology. 2) Combining sitting meditation with medical internal energy training.
  • Post-doctoral: 1) Gerontology. 2) Advanced Skills for Treatment, Neigong, Dao Yin, Yi Chuan, 3) Curiculum Design and Teaching Methods, 4) Advanced quiescent meditation retreats and training.

  • Shambhala Buddhism with Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and various Acharyas (teachers) including Pema Chodron.

The International Institute of Medical Qigong

The IIMQ was inspired by the Medical Qigong College of the Hai Dian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (in Beijing, China). The Chinese Ministry of Health honored the IIMQ in 2005 as meeting or exceeding the Chinese standards for academic and clinical instruction. In 2006, Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine authorized the IIMQ to be its Overseas College of Medical Qigong.

For over 20 years the IIMQ has been educating Westerners in Chinese energetic medicine. With clinical branches in 8 countries and 13 states, it has authorized instructors in 4 countries and 8 states.

The IIMQ was founded by Professor Jerry Alan Johnson, and currently headed by Dr. Bernard Shannon, DMQ who is the Executive Director. My gratitude to them and to my other teachers (including Dr. Seth Lefkowitz, DMQ, DC) and my fellow practitioners is deep. In particular, I hope I can reflect the example of the exertion and loyalty of Dr. Bernard Shannon to the high standards of medical qigong knowledge and instruction, and to the healthy functioning of the IIMQ.
